You Can Buy the Slot, Not the Answer

AI search started selling ads at industrial scale this week — and the data proves paid placement and earned citations are two different games. Meanwhile, new ad real estate opened up everywhere from CTV to game consoles.

You Can Buy the Slot, Not the Answer

1 Google AI Mode runs ads on 1 in 3 commercial queries

SE Ranking analyzed 50,032 commercial keywords across 20 niches and found that 29.45% now return a text ad in Google's AI Mode — and 71.1% of those show two competing ads side by side. CPC predicted ad presence better than anything else, climbing from 24.33% on sub-$2 keywords to 53.56% at $10 and up, while search volume and keyword difficulty showed no correlation at all. Niche swings are dramatic: pets returned an ad on 72.38% of keywords, healthcare just 2.64%.

AI Mode went from zero ads to nearly a third of commercial queries in under a year, which makes today's numbers the floor, not the ceiling. Want to predict where ads will show in your category? Sort your keyword list by CPC — and expect to share the answer box with a competitor seven times out of ten.

2 Buying the ad won't get you cited

The same study delivered the finding that should reset a few budgets: in 88% of ad keywords, the advertiser's domain was nowhere among the sources AI Mode cited. Only 11.53% of advertiser domains appeared in citations at all, and just 1.95% at the exact URL level. Fully 85% of advertisers didn't rank organically for the term they were bidding on — and when SE Ranking controlled for domain strength and organic standing, advertisers were cited no more often than non-advertisers.

Paid placement and earned citations are two separate channels wearing the same interface. Ad spend buys the box next to the answer; becoming the answer stays an authority-and-content play. Budget AI Mode ads and GEO work separately, because neither one moves the other.

3 Google AI Overviews now generates its own images

Google is rolling out image generation directly inside AI Overviews, powered by its Nano Banana model — type a prompt, get a custom image, never leave the results page. It launches in English wherever image creation already works in AI Mode, bundled with a redesign of Google Image Search on its 25th anniversary that now opens with a gallery instead of a search box.

Every reason to click just got a little thinner. If a searcher wanted a visual and Google makes one inside the answer, that site visit was never going to happen. Image-search traffic is now a real risk category, not a theoretical one — and original photography and proprietary visuals just became harder to substitute, which is exactly why they matter more.

4 UK regulators forced an AI search opt-out — and Google took it global

The UK's Competition and Markets Authority ordered Google to give publishers more leverage over how their content feeds AI search. One day later, Google announced it's testing a tool that lets site owners opt out of AI summaries entirely — with no ranking penalty in traditional results, and controls expected to apply globally, not just in the UK.

If major publishers opt out at scale, AI Overviews get thinner and less reliable, which could push searchers back toward the blue links. The bigger signal: regulation is now shaping AI product decisions in days, not years. Watch who opts out — the citation pool you're optimizing for may be about to shrink.

5 OpenAI is shipping ChatGPT ad controls at startup speed

OpenAI added location and audience exclusions to ChatGPT Ads Manager this week — following audience lists, new metrics and reporting, and a self-serve beta with CPC bidding, all inside the past few weeks. Ads now appear in roughly 49% of US replies, and OpenAI's own data says about 20% of ChatGPT conversations carry shopping intent.

That's a real ad platform taking shape at weekly cadence, even as analysts report revenue pacing far below OpenAI's own forecast. For marketers, exclusions matter more than they sound: geographic waste is the fastest way to burn a small budget, and until now you couldn't stop it here. Small test budgets, tight geos, close watch.

6 GA4 quietly gave AI traffic its own channel

Google Analytics 4's "AI Assistant" channel — live under Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition — now separates visits from chatbots like ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude from organic search. Read the fine print, though: AI Overviews and AI Mode clicks still report as Organic Search, so this measures the assistants, not Google's own AI surfaces.

Filter Pages and screens by this channel and you'll see exactly which pages AI cites and sends clicks from. In early testing, top organic pages and top AI-assisted pages didn't overlap — different pages doing different jobs. That's free intelligence about your AI visibility that didn't exist in usable form a year ago.

7 LinkedIn finally tells you if you reached anyone new

LinkedIn's reach breakdown is rolling out globally: post analytics now split impressions into in-network (followers and connections) and out-of-network (people who found you through feed recommendations, reshares and search). It lives in the Discovery section under impressions.

Out-of-network reach is the algorithm deciding your post deserved strangers — a far better performance signal than follower count. One caution: it's a percentage, so read it against absolute impressions. Eighty percent out-of-network on 300 views is not the same win as forty percent on 8,000.

8 Fox is buying Roku for $22 billion

Fox announced plans to acquire Roku for $22 billion, which would hand it two of the most-watched ad-supported streaming platforms in the US — Roku and Tubi, together roughly 5.2% of all US streaming viewership. CEO Lachlan Murdoch noted only about a one-third audience overlap between the two, and Fox originally sold its Roku stake in 2020 to fund the Tubi purchase.

This is first-party data consolidation reshaping the CTV buying landscape: two distinct, targetable audiences feeding one unified data spine. Advertisers who move quickly on unified inventory like this get insights from one platform informing targeting on the other — without paying twice for the same viewers.

9 EA turned its games into an ad platform

Electronic Arts released EA Advertising, a platform for branded content, in-game placements and campaign measurement across its EA Sports catalog — all through one integrated system. Around 90% of Millennials and Gen Z play video games, yet in-game advertising has historically been scattered, limited and disconnected from modern measurement.

EA won't serve ads programmatically at launch, but Roblox is already building programmatic-style targeting, and the direction of travel is clear. In-game could be the next channel to break through the way CTV did — and the attention is still underpriced while the pipes get built.

10 JioStar posted the 530-million-user quarter

India's JioStar grew revenue 14% to ₹10,946 crore (about $1.3 billion) with operating EBITDA up 30.7%, as streaming service JioHotstar reached 530 million monthly users. It's also launching six simultaneous editions of Bigg Boss, repositioning the two-decade-old franchise as a single full-funnel ad platform combining national scale with regional relevance.

At 530 million monthly users, India's streaming consolidation is minting exactly the kind of unified ad platform US media is still assembling through M&A — see Fox–Roku above. For global brands, the lesson travels: scale plus regional depth in one buy is what every platform is racing to package.
